The principle is simple: using the interuptor, open the valve that releases the exhaut line.
This way you decide to reduce or increase the flow of gas, and therefore the noise.
 
This principle would have a more liberated exhaust line by simply pressing a button, but without the constraint of a muted eg to limit noise.
